[news]3 Nigerians Iwuoha, Macaulay, And Banjo Charged In U.S. With $16.4m Tax Fraud

As many as three Nigerians, identified as Francis Nwabueze Iwuoha, 38, Oluwadamilare Gbenga Macaulay, 32, and Olufemi Oluwaseun Banjo, 37, who is also known as “Femi Banjo.”face felony charges in the United States for their alleged involvement in a scheme to steal income tax refunds using identity theft, PM News reports.

Two of the Nigerians, Banjo and Iwuoha are based in Lagos, while Macaulay is based in Abuja.

U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald announced on Wednesday that the three defendants, who are now fugitives, have been charged with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy related to the alleged scheme.

According to the allegations in the indictments, from approximately March 2016, through approximately February 2018, BANJO, IWUOHA, and MACAULAY, gained unauthorised access to internet accounts of thousands of individual victims to steal Personal Identifying Information (PII) and IRS W-2 Forms, which they used to file false tax returns in the names of the individual victims seeking fraudulent refunds.

As part of the scheme, BANJO, IWUOHA, MACAULAY, and others gained unauthorised access to approximately 1,200 individuals’ accounts maintained by a Minnesota-based company that provides human resource and payroll services to numerous businesses.

The accounts were registered with a web-based program that allowed employees to download a copy of their IRS Form W-2 from an internet portal. After fraudulently obtaining PII and tax information from the accounts, BANJO, IWUOHA, MACAULAY, and others used the information to prepare and electronically file fraudulent tax returns with the IRS.

As part of the scheme, BANJO, IWUOHA, MACAULAY, and others also gained unauthorised access to individuals’ accounts maintained by the Department of Education by exploiting an online tool that facilitates the transfer of individuals’ PII and tax information from the IRS website to the Department of Education.

The defendants used the stolen information to prepare and electronically file fraudulent tax returns with the IRS. As a result of the scheme, BANJO, IWUOHA, MACAULAY, and others attempted to claim a total of approximately $16.4 million in fraudulent tax refunds.

“These cases are the result of an investigation conducted by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Inspector General, and the FBI”, Erica MacDonald said.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie E. Allyn and Angela M. Munoz are prosecuting the cases.

“We remain optimistic that the defendants will have their date in court in the U.S., but we can’t get into further detail with respect to our apprehension efforts,” U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Tasha Zerna told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

[news] Father And Son Who Are Doctors Die of COVID-19 After Saving Coronavirus Victims

August 13, 2020

The sad story how a father and his son who are doctors died in Florida after contracting COVID-19 has been told. It was gathered tha they have been treating coronavirus patients before the sad tragedy.

According to Dailymail, Dr. Carlos Francisco Vallejo, 57, is believed to have been infected by one of his patients and five family members ended up sick with coronavirus including his wife and father Dr. Jorge A. Vallejo.

Dr. Jorge, 89, was widowed in 2005 and Dr. Carlos – an internist working on the frontlines with up to 76 patients including residents at three nursing homes – often provided his care.

Both Hialeah residents were admitted to hospital on June 27 but Jorge – a retired obstetrician and gynecologist – passed away six days later at Palmetto General Hospital, where Dr. Carlos was a board director.

Carlos – who was a father-of-three – lost his battle with the virus on August 1 after 42 days in intensive care at the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston.
‘We just lost basically both of our anchors of our whole entire family,’ CBS4 News reporter Jessica Vallejo told the Miami Herald. ‘In my eyes, [my grandfather] was the American Dream.’

Dr. Carlos was her uncle and Dr. Jorge was her grandfather. Dr. Jorge – who fled Cuba for Florida with his wife and children – delivered eight of his nine grandchildren.

He delivered the late Cuban salsa icon Celia Cruz and was also famed locally for delivering what was once the smallest baby in the US 28 years ago, at less than one pound in weight.

‘It made me feel near to God,’ Dr. Jorge told the Miami Herald in 1992, about delivering Baby Zascha.
Dr. Carlos’ children also called him a hero, saying he took all the precautions amid the pandemic and would use his personal time to make sure patients had everything they needed.

‘He really was a hero to so many people. I didn’t even want him to go to the nursing home and the hospitals because I was terrified,’ his 31-year-old daughter, Gisselle Vallejo, told the Herald.

‘He wanted to be loyal. It was like he was available for them 24/7. He really was the true definition of a hero. I knew that when COVID started, that he was going to be a hero.’

‘He was just my role model. I could talk to him every day for hours,’ his 23-year-old Kevin Vallejo said. ‘He was such a giving doctor that if his patients were going through a hard time… he would see them for free and tell them not to worry about it.’

Kevin was set to begin medical school on Monday but delayed his studies at Florida International University due to his father’s passing.

Carlos’ 26-year-old son Charlie said his dad took the internal medicine career path despite being offered a scholarship in the Caribbean.

‘My dad was a great athlete … he actually turned down a [sports] scholarship to study medicine in the Dominican Republic,’ Charlie said.

He added about his father’s great work on the frontlines: ‘A lot of these patients are scared and alone. A lot of families are not able to say their final goodbyes and it’s a tragedy.’

There are 20 doctors, dentists and medical students in their family.

CBS4 reporter Jessica said her family is the ‘perfect example of what doctors should be … doctors who dedicate their lives to their patients.’

Charlie told the station: ‘Just like firefighters put their life on the line, we do the same going into hospitals. It’s whatever you can do to heal and save your patients.’

Carlos’ psychiatrist wife is hoping her sons follow in his footsteps.

‘I’m going to ask God for strength so my sons can finish medical school and follow in their father’s footsteps. I think that’s what he’d want me to do,’ coronavirus survivor Lisette Vallejo, 57, told CBS4.

[news]2023 Igbo Presidency: MASSOB And Ohanaeze Fight Dirty

August 13, 2020

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has slammed Ohanaeze Ndigbo for saying the group’s mandate is to realise a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction and not an independent state of Biafra.

MASSOB, which reacted to a statement credited to the leader of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation in Anambra State, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, said MASSOB remained the voice of Ndigbo and not Ohanaeze.

Okeke-Ogene had on Tuesday Ohanaeze Ndigbo was pursuing Igbo presidency because the executive of Ohanaeze led by Chief Nnia Nwodo, had the mandate of Ndigbo to negotiate the Igbo position in Nigeria.

But the National Director of information for MASSOB, Mr Sunday Okereafor, stated on Wednesday that contrary to Okeke-Ogene’s position, the people of the South-East were no longer interested in having a president of Igbo extraction, ThePunch reports. Okereafor said, “Ohanaeze has no agenda, but only pursuing their interest. They (Ohanaeze) are now shouting Igbo presidency.

One of them is saying if they fail to get Igbo presidency in 2023, they will join Nnamdi Kanu to get Biafra.“The fact is that when they get to that point, one Ibrahim will emerge, and Onu will be the Vice President.“Ohanaeze is not the voice of the Igbo; MASSOB is the voice of the Igbo.

The leaders of the Igbo are in MASSOB. If you present Igbo presidency and Biafra to the Igbo, you will see that the Igbo will pick Biafra and dump Igbo presidency,” Okereafor added.

[news] “Send Old Generation Out Of Power” – Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo Urges African Youths

August 13, 2020

Olusegun Obasanjo, an ex-president has urged African youths to come together and use their electoral power to pursue the older generation from all leadership positions.

Speaking at an interactive session held virtually to mark this year’s International Youth Day on Wednesday, August 12, the former President said unless old people are forced out of the political stage, they will continue to occupy the leadership positions which is a disservice to the youths in Africa.

“Unless you squeeze out those who are in office and those who want to remain in office perpetually, some after the age of 80, unless you squeeze them out, they will not want to be out.

The type of change I am talking about, that I believe we can all embark upon is to subscribe to the constitution of political parties in favour of youths or if you like it you call it affirmative action in favour of youths.

For instance, if you say, in the constitution of a political party, not less than 50 per cent of those who hold executive office within the party will be less than 40 years.

You can  even go  beyond that and say that people who will be put up for election, not less than 50 per cent of them will be less than 40 years of age. That’s affirmative action. That’s positive discrimination in favour of youths
.” he said.

Atiku Abubakar Launches Online TV As New Channel Of Campaign

August 13, 2020

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has launched an online television that will henceforth propagate his social and political activities.

The event took place at the Five Star Bristol Palace Hotel, Kano, where a video clip showed the former vice president speaking on his vision and aspiration.

Atiku was represented at the occasion by one of his sons and political allies, particularly PDP members.

The Atiku TV was launched by Hajiya Baraka Sani, a former Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Special Adviser to former president Goodluck Jonathan.

Baraka Sani said the ‘Atiku TV’ is a new approach that will change Atiku’s mode of reaching out to people from analogue to digital, henceforth.

She explained that the contents (about Atiku) for the television will be developed in YouTubes and circulated on the cyberspace, via WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms of the new media.

Four-term Senator representing Kano North, Sen. Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, said a lot of politicians will soon begin to copy Atiku’s style.

“In developed countries, people sit in their homes and watch campaign plans of candidates on the television; you must not carry hundreds of vehicles and begin to move from one village to another, and from house to house.

“The digital campaign sets the records of your campaign promises straight, so that people can hold you responsible when you fail to deliver on your promises.

“Most Nigerian politicians go to elective office empty headed, that is why you hear of several blames when things fail to work as expected,” Gwarzo said.

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Atiku on Youths and Strategy, Dr. Ahmed Adamu, said: “Today, everything is online. The voting population is also moving online. So, if you are a politician, candidate or public figure with a vision or anything you want to share or sell, the best platform to reach out to the people is the digital space.

He added: “We have over 130 million Nigerians on the internet, which is more than the votes required to win the presidency of Nigeria. And Atiku has a great vision for Nigeria. What he might lack is reaching out to the people, to really understand his vision. So, Atiku Tv is a channel to educate Nigerians about his vision.

“Atiku has set the bar high as a credible candidate with great vision no other candidate ever had. The bar he has raised is so high that any other candidate that is coming must try to be like him or to do more than he does. And that is the kind of president we need in Nigeria, because leadership is about vision.

“We may not believe in a leader’s vision but the leader believes in his, while leading people when he gets to power. Atiku TV is therefore, a channel to broadcast, share and educate the people about Atiku Abubakar, his personality and vision. Many people know Atiku only as a politician; they know less about his vision,” he said.

Adamu, who denied that the Atiku TV was launched with an eye on 2023 presidential election, however, stressed that Atiku, may contest, if the security and economic challenges of the country persist.

“We are not promoting Atiku’s presidential ambition, because it is not yet time, and Atiku is not desperate for a political position. He is concerned about Nigeria and its future.

“But the problems that Atiku saw in the past are still unsolved. And if Nigeria has not reached the level of prosperity it desires, he will not rest. He was lucky to attain education and positions, but what about others who are not privileged? Atiku is doing it for the underprivileged, especially the youth.

“So, as long as security and economic challenges keep persisting, I think Atiku will be willing to throw his cap into the ring once again to savage the situation in the country,” Adamu said.
